There are two pieces of drawing work hanging next to a television in my house. My husband and I made them at a drawing workshop which was held in Realti with artist Jaekyung Kim in March last year. Mine is probably the only surviving thing that hasn’t been thrown into a trash bin or a box with luck only because I made it. The theme of the workshop was ‘Strolling’ and people expressed their own with color pens on acrylic sheets. I remember she said it didn’t have to be about strolling and we could just express our thoughts and feelings that we had then. So there went a pint of Guinness on my husband’s sheet and I drew the Statue of Liberty shouting ‘New York!’, a face of an actor I like who was born in New York and the coolest thing he said in a drama because I was so excited to go to an art fair in New York for the first time in my life. Looking at the drawing now brings back all the excitement and joy I had then and I’m sure it will do the same when I become a grandmother. It is an absolute masterpiece to me.
It makes me think that artist Jaekyung Kim not only delivers the pleasure of appreciating art but also connects art to one with their own experience. It’s easy to see it once you get to see her exhibition with her paintings and installation under the theme of strolling. Various colored figures and objects which seem to belong perfectly within the space - people with a bird head and wings, people with speech ballooned heads and dog-looking cats and etc. - are taking a walk here and there around those houses made of triangles and squares. And I, standing in this curious and playful place, find myself walking and talking to them as well in no time. A father who couldn’t stop smiling once he stepped into the space, a man who seemed to meditate while walking there in silence for a while, child visitors who kept shouting ‘So pretty!, So cute!’ would have all felt the same. Pure or wanting to be pure, it might be the state of focusing on their true feelings, forgetting about everything else.
It doesn't seem to matter at all and so I am not inclined to ask why her houses are shaped only in triangles and squares, why this person had a bird head or about the angel’s wings, what those speech balloons would mean to the artist, etc. to understand her art. It is just enough if I take time and listen to myself for once and sincerely appreciate my feelings while looking at her abstract paintings and installation work that looks exactly like those abstract paintings but three dimensional. I cannot tell what she might have felt while she was working on her art with wonderful images and metaphors but I wonder if we felt the same while looking at her ‘Strolling’ such as comfort, relief and gratitude. 코로나19 기부 전시 프로젝트 - 산책하실까요?, 작가 김재경 #12
우리 집 텔레비전 옆에는 신랑과 제가 만든 드로잉 작품 두 개가 나란히 놓여 있습니다. 작년 3월 리알티에서 김재경 작가님을 모시고 진행된 드로잉 워크숍에서 완성했던 것인데 완성 후 단지 제가 만들었다는 이유로 버려지거나 운이 좋아 잡동사니 박스 안에 들어가지 않게 된 저의 유일한 창작품이 아닐까 싶습니다. 그 때 워크숍 주제가 '산책'이었는데 사람들이 산책에 어울리는 각자의 생각을 흰색 아크릴판 위에 표현했고 제 기억에 작가님이 꼭 산책이 아니어도 되니까 지금의 감정을 나타내보라 하셨습니다. 그래서 맥주를 좋아하는 신랑의 아크릴판 위에는 그가 애정하는 기네스 파인트 한 잔이 그려져 있고, 그 당시 태어나서 처음 가 보게 될 뉴욕의 한 아트 페어에 들떠 있었던 저는 뉴욕을 외치고 있는 자유의 여신상을 비롯한 제가 좋아하는 뉴욕 태생의 배우 얼굴 그리고 그가 극 중에서 남긴 세상 멋진 말 등을 아크릴판 위에 그리고 적었습니다. 저의 창작품을 보고 있으니 그때 그 기분이 다시 떠오르는 것을 보면 이 드로잉은 꼬부랑 할머니가 된 후에 보아도 그 당시의 흥분과 열정을 불러올 것이 분명한 저에게는 참 소중한 걸작이 아닐 수 없습니다.
그러고 보면 김재경 작가님은 이렇게 예술이 주는 감동을 단지 작품을 통해 보여주시는 것이 아니라 직접 느낄 수 있도록 다리를 놓고 계신다는 생각이 듭니다. 그것은 '산책'을 주제로 회화와 설치 작업을 주로 하시는 작가님의 전시장만 가 보아도 금방 알 수 있습니다. 공간에 참 어울리는 알록달록한 색깔의 다양한 형상들, 이를테면 새 머리에 날개 달린 사람들, 머리에 말풍선이 달린 것 같은 사람들, 강아지 같은 고양이들이 세모, 네모로 만들어진 집들 사이 사이를 곳곳으로 돌아다닙니다. 그리고 이러한 형상들이 만들어낸 장난기 어리고 호기심 가득한 공간에 서 있는 저도 어느새 그들과 함께 인사를 하고 이야기를 나누며 산책을 하고 있습니다. 여기에 들어오니 웃음이 자꾸 난다는 한 아이의 아버지도 전시장 안을 말 없이 몇 시간을 걷기만 하다 가신 어느 관람객도 전시장 안을 들어서며 '예쁘다! 귀엽다!'를 연발하는 꼬마 관람객들도 모두 같은 마음이었을 것입니다. 순수하거나 또는 순수해지고 싶은, 다른 생각은 모두 잊고 이 공간에서 이들과 함께 나의 감정에 충실하고 싶은 그런 마음 말입니다.
작가님의 집은 왜 세모, 네모로 되어 있는지, 옆으로 서 있는 이 사람이 새 머리를 하는 이유는 무엇인지, 천사 날개는 왜 하고 있는지, 사람들 머리에 있는 말풍선은 작가님에게 무엇을 의미하는지 같은 것들을 궁금해하는 것은 애초에 작가님의 작업 세계를 이해하는 데 아무 상관이 없는 것들인지도 모릅니다. 작가님만의 선과 색, 은유와 상징을 표현하는 과정에서 작가님이 느낀 감정들이 존재했을 것임이 분명하듯 작가님의 이전 추상 회화 작품들과 마치 그 회화를 입체로 옮겨 놓은 듯한 산책 설치 작품들을 보면서 제가 제 마음에 귀를 기울이는 시간을 가지고 마음이 동했다면 그것만으로도 충분했던 것입니다. 작가님과의 산책에서 제 마음이 저에게 속삭인 위로와 안정 그리고 감사하는 마음처럼 말이죠. 산책하실까요?
