Beauty Will Save the World - Dagyeom Lee #5: A Novel Written In Images

Yesterday, I watched a movie called ‘Arrival’. I watched the movie before but it had been a long time and artist Dagyeom Lee mentioned it when she was talking about her artwork. She said when the heptapods in the movie shot an ink-like black liquid at the glass wall she shouted saying ‘That is what my art is like!’ and I wondered how that must have made her feel. I also wondered what it would be like watching the movie after I had appreciated her art pieces and had a conversation with her. And so, for the entirety of the movie from the first scene of the movie, to the final scene of the movie, I could not get the artist’s world of art out of my head.
“But now I’m not so sure if I believe in beginnings and endings.”
This is a quote from the main character. Dagyeom Lee’s artwork represents colors through lines and is never a strange image but becomes a strange language that plays in my dreams. Her artwork with lines of colors which, of course, have beginnings and endings because they are lines don’t define the beginnings and endings, this is just like what the main character said in the movie. It is obviously a bright, clear and pretty image but it looks more like someone’s writing than it does a painting. It is all a flower pot, a tree, a flower garden, a fence that takes one’s breath away with all sorts and kinds of beautiful colors. Although, those beautiful colors make me feel dizzy like the dazzling entrance of ‘Paul’s Miraculous Adventure’ when Paul jumped into to save Nina who was kidnapped by the king of demons. Sooner or later, here I am making my own story by interpreting what she created in the pot, tree, flower garden and the fence. How extraordinary!

I tend to live my life thinking there is nothing I can’t do if I really try, no regrets if I do my best. On the bright day I met her when the sun was beating down on us and we talked and talked until the sun had become the moon. That day we were so into talking to each other that we even forgot we were hungry. I was excited because I felt like I met someone who thought so similarly to me. Artist Dagyeom Lee who wants me to make it clear that she has a career as an artist simply knows she is doing her best in her work. Her goal in her work is to tell a story in images of drawings and colors and you could say her lines are her words. By the way, what I love about her work is that she doesn’t have to repeat the same thing over and over again. Her lines can become a picture, a story and sometimes even a movie and welcome us into her world of fantasy.

코로나19 기부 전시 프로젝트 - 이미지로 쓰는 소설, 작가 이다겸 #5
저는 어제 '컨택트(Arrival)'라는 외국 영화를 보았습니다. 이다겸 작가님이 작품에 대한 이야기를 하시면서 저는 본지 오래되어 가물가물한 이 영화에 대한 이야기를 하셨기 때문입니다. 영화 속 외계 생명체 헵타포드가 먹물 같은 검은 액체를 유리벽에 '찍'하고 뿌리는 순간 작가님이 '이게 나의 그림 이야기인데!'하고 외쳤던 순간은 어떤 느낌이었을지 저도 궁금했습니다. 작가님의 작품에 대한 저만의 감상도 충분히 가졌고 그 후 작가님과 대화도 나눈 후에 보는 이 영화의 느낌은 또 과연 어떨지 궁금한 마음도 들었습니다. 그런데 영화의 첫 장면, 배우의 첫 대사에서부터 영화를 보는 내내 저는 이다겸 작가님의 작업 세계를 머릿속에서 떼어 놓을 수가 없었습니다.
"하지만 이제 나는 시작과 끝이 있는지 잘 모르겠어."
영화 속 주인공의 말입니다. 선을 색으로 표현하는 작가님의 작품은 결코 낯설지 않은 이미지이지만 결국 낯선 언어가 되어 저를 꿈꾸게 만듭니다. 색채의 선으로 이루어진 작가님의 작품에는 당연히 선이니까 그것의 시작과 끝이 있음에도 불구하고 영화 속 주인공의 말처럼 시작과 끝이 구분되지 않습니다. 분명히 눈이 부시도록 선명한 하나의 예쁜 그림인데 그림이라기 보다는 누군가의 글씨처럼 보이기도 합니다. 형형색색의 감탄을 자아내는 예쁜 화분이고, 나무이고, 꽃밭이고, 담장인데 그 수천 가지 색채로 이루어진 선들은 어릴 때 재미있게 보았던 일본 만화 '이상한 나라의 폴'의 폴이 대마왕에게 납치된 니나를 구하기 위해 빠져 들어가는 어질어질한 이상한 나라의 입구처럼 저를 어지럽게 만듭니다. 저는 그렇게 작가님의 작품 속 화분과 나무와 꽃밭과 담장을 넘어 작가님이 만들어 놓으신 이야기 속에서 체면에 걸린 사람처럼 저만의 이야기를 만들고 있습니다. 참 신기합니다.
저는 이 세상에는 열심히 노력해서 안 되는 것이 없고, 무엇이든 최선을 다하면 후회가 없다고 생각하며 살아가는 편입니다. 작가님과 해가 중천에 떴을 때 만나 깜깜한 밤이 되도록 이야기를 나누었던 날, 배가 고픈지도 모르고 한참을 그렇게 이야기를 나누었던 그날 저는 저와 비슷한 생각을 하는 사람을 만난 것 같아 무척이나 기분이 좋았습니다. 예술가라는 직업을 가진 작가님은 본인의 직업에 최선을 다하는 것을 당연하게 여기시는 것 같습니다. 직무는 작가님만의 전매특허인 '선'을 가지고 때로는 드로잉으로 때로는 색채로 이미지의 산문집을 만드는 것입니다. 그런데 같은 일을 계속해서 반복하지 않아도 되는 작가님의 직업이 너무 부럽습니다. 작가님의 선은 그림이 되고, 이야기가 되고, 때로는 영화가 되어 견고한 환상의 세계로 우리를 초대합니다.
