[한글][ENG] COVID-19 DONATION ART EXHIBITION
My life has been simple with no interest in high-tech such as smartphones because I am not good with machines. It has been 3 years since I started managing Realti Art Space and now my smartphone is a must have and I can’t operate without the internet. Frankly, I think the internet is the best way to exhibit our ventures in art and culture. Despite the sign placed on the second floor, the hidden entrance at the end of the narrow alleyway between restaurants and seems more like a nice spot to hide for smoke, people still come to see our exhibitions and concerts. I know they found us on the internet but it always surprises me. I still struggle with my instagram posts and my blog, but it is amazing that they work to draw enough attention so we can share our art and culture with them.
The value of the internet doesn’t end there. It’s not just people I’ve always known but people I have met in passing and shared good times with. I can still contact many acquaintances such as - the backpacker from Germany who loved Kimchi soup, the American artist who showed me a special storage of the Met Museum that tourists rarely stop by, the French artist who was very interested in Korean media art - are still connected on the internet with me and I get excited to imagine meeting them again in the future. There are also people who I met on the internet and grew fond of but haven’t had the opportunity to meet in person yet. As for the artist, I am not sure how he came to know Realti, but he sends useful information on art competitions via messenger and here is artist BoomBeom who is the 13th participant that I’m going to introduce now.
In the height of the horror of Covid-19 just a few months ago, there was a comment in support of the video of artist Bojung Park, the first participant for this project. He said he would love to take part in this project if he becomes a famous artist. I left my comment under it saying thanks and I would be honored to have him participate now. That’s how our meeting began, connected by a YouTube algorithm. Last year, artist BoomBeom was thinking of having a picture of sunflowers in the house one day and happened to impulse buy some paints. Then, he experienced this magical moment of undisturbed peace while he was painting. He has worked on making his art as a hobby since then. The virus then broke out and he had to take time off work. He has since been using most of his time working on his art. He is insecure about his art and also he didn't want to take the spot of a long time working artist in an exhibition. I told him his art was great and there are no winners or losers in art. We talked online when we could and I received a box of his donated artwork with a logo of his signature and a big smiley face on it a few days ago.
The intention of the donation art exhibition project for COVID19 was to gather small but precious effort to fight the Pandemic of the Century, not to show that some famous artists donate some expensive artwork. Therefore, requirements to take part in this project such as how much the artwork for donation should be, which artwork should be appropriate for this kind of donation, how many art exhibitions the artist should have to participate as an artist did not matter at all in the beginning. In fact, I never understand these limitations when I believe anything can be art. What I was most attracted to was a beautiful mind wanting to help others including the artist BoomBeom and people with new ideas, creativity, love for art.
I want to thank the artist Boombeom for being part of this project again. It is ironic that I wouldn’t be able to say hello to him even if he passed me by right now but I will always hope to see the day that he shines the world with the ‘Boom!’ of his artwork. I also want to thank all the people, whether I know you or not, including a paint company and a local art museum on Instagram, supporting us by clicking ‘like’ whenever I post photos to promote our activities. I still get confused in the realm of the internet doubting if those random people online are real or bots. However, the way the internet world works for them may be the same as the real world no matter if they are bots or not. After all, It was we, the humans, who made recommendation algorithms, hashtags, ‘Primary and Alt Char’, the Internet of Emotions and so on. I truly believe that I will meet the second and third BoomBeom if I continue to live online where all kinds of people and stories, fake or real, are pouring as sincerely as I try to live and not hurt anyone in the real world.

코로나19 기부 전시 프로젝트 - 로봇이 아닙니다. 작가 붐범 #13
저는 기계와 별로 친하지 않은 탓에 몇년 전만 해도 스마트폰 같은 최첨단 장비들에 전혀 관심이 없는 삶을 살았습니다. 하지만, 3년 전 리알티를 운영하면서 어느덧 스마트폰은 저에게 필수가 되었고 인터넷은 저에게 없어서는 안될 세상이 되었습니다. 솔직히 저는 문화예술 활동을 알리는 데 인터넷만큼 훌륭한 효자손이 없다고 생각합니다. 간판은 2층에 있고 입구는 식당들 사이 숨어서 담배 피기 좋은 골목 구석에 위치해 보이지도 않는 지하 공간의 전시와 공연을 관람객들이 어떻게 알고 오시는지는 경로가 인터넷인줄 알면서도 신기하고 궁금합니다. 아직도 포스팅 하나 올리는데 온갖 버튼을 눌러가며 진땀을 빼지만 그래도 리알티에서 일어나는 문화예술활동들이 우리들만의 잔치로 끝나지 않고 온라인 세상을 통해 어느 누군가의 관심을 끌어 함께 할 수 있다는 것은 참 멋진 일입니다.
인터넷 세상의 매력은 여기서 끝나지 않습니다. 저는 전부터 알고 지낸 지인들 뿐만 아니라 우연히 만나 스쳐 지났을 인연들, 김치찌개를 좋아했던 독일 배낭여행가, 관광객의 발길이 닿지 않는 매트로폴리탄의 수장고를 데려가준 미국 작가, 한국 미디어 아트에 관심이 많았던 프랑스 예술가에게 인터넷 세상을 통해 소식을 전하며 다시 만날 날을 상상해 보기도 합니다. 그런가하면 인터넷 세상에서 처음 만나 애틋한 감정은 쌓여가는데 아직 얼굴도 본 적이 없는 사람들도 있습니다. 어떤 경로로 리알티를 알게 되었는지 정확하진 않지만 유용한 아트 공모전을 개별 메신저로 공유해주는 어느 작가와 이번에 소개해 드릴 13번째 참여 작가 붐범님도 있습니다.
몇달 전 코로나19에 대한 공포가 절정에 달하고 있을 때 저의 프로젝트의 첫 번째를 장식하신 박보정 작가님의 소개 영상 아래에 멋진 일을 한다는 응원과 함께 본인도 유명한 작가가 되면 작품 기부를 해보고 싶다는 바램이 담긴 댓글이 달렸습니다. 이어 저는 감사하다는 인사와 참여를 하시면 영광이라는 답글을 달았고 그렇게 유튜브 알고리즘이 엮어준 저희의 만남이 시작되었습니다. 붐범님은 작년에 해바라기 그림을 걸고 싶다는 생각을 문득 하다 우연히 계획에 없던 물감을 사게 되는 일이 일어났고, 그림을 그리는 동안 잡생각이 들지 않는 신기한 경험을 하게 되어 유튜브 소스를 활용하여 그림 그리기 취미 생활을 열심히 하시다 코로나19 때문에 일을 쉬어야 하는 상황이 발생하면서 요즘은 그림 그리기에만 전념을 하고 있는 분입니다. 붐범님은 참여를 원하시면서도 본인같은 예술 입문자가 그동안 소개된 분들께 민폐가 아닌가 계속 걱정을 하셨고 저는 작품이 멋있다고 말하며 정답이 없고 1등과 꼴찌가 없는 것이 예술이라고 생각한다고 말했습니다. 생각날 때 시간날 때마다 그렇게 우리는 온라인에서 대화를 나누었고 몇 일전 저는 기부 작품이 든 겉에는 붐범 로고와 스마일이 그려진 박스 하나를 우편으로 받았습니다.
코로나19 기부전시프로젝트를 시작할 때 저의 목적은 세기를 뒤흔든 역병으로 병든 세상을 함께 헤쳐 나가기 위해서 작지만 소중한 힘을 모으기 위함이었지 유명한 아무개 작가가 얼마짜리 작품을 기부했다는 것을 알리기 위함이 아니었습니다. 그렇기에 기부 작품가가 얼마에 시작하는지, 기부에 어떤 작품을 내는 것이 적당한지, 참여하기 위해 전시 경력이 몇 번 있어야 하는지 등은 처음부터 저의 목적과는 아무 상관이 없었습니다. 그리고 솔직히 모든 것이 예술이 될 수 있다고 믿는 저는 그런 제한들이 애초에 이해가 가지 않습니다. 기부 작품이 엽서가 되었든 작가가 자주 쓰던 붓이 되었든 무엇이 되었든지간에 제가 열광한 것은 13번째 참여하시는 붐범님처럼 누군가를 도와야겠다는 아름다운 마음씨와 새로운 생각, 창작, 예술을 사랑하는 모든 분들이었습니다.
프로젝트에 참여해 주신 붐범 작가님께 다시 한 번 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 비록 제 옆을 지나가더라도 인사조차 할 수 없다는 사실이 아이러니 하지만 언젠가 이름처럼 ‘붐’하고 그림으로 세상을 환하게 비추기를 저도 항상 응원할 것입니다. 그리고 이 기회를 빌어 리알티에서 일어나는 예술 활동들을 포스팅 할 때마다 잊지 않고 ‘좋아요’를 눌러주시는 어느 물감 회사와 지역 박물관 계정 관리자 분을 포함한 제가 모르거나 알거나 저희를 관심있게 지켜보시는 다른 모든 분들께도 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 아직도 저에게는 온라인 세상이 낯설고 가끔은 방금 이 사람 로봇이었을까 하는 엉뚱한 상상을 하지만 그분들이 로봇이거나 아니거나간에 인터넷 세상도 결국 제가 살아가는 세상과 다를 바가 없을 것입니다. 추천 알고리즘과 해쉬태그라는 희한한 원리들, 얼마전 배운 본캐와 부캐, 마케팅에서 강조하는 인터넷 감성도 모두 우리라는 사람이 만드는 것이니까요. 눈에 보이는 현실의 세상을 남에게 상처주지 않고 노력하며 살아가듯이 그렇게 인터넷 세상을 살아가다보면 진짜와 가짜가 판을 친다는 정신없는 이 인터넷 세상에서 저는 제2의 제3의 붐범님을 또 만나는 행운을 얻게 될 것이라고 굳게 믿습니다.
