Sungkyung Lee majored in Korean painting and usually works on a Korean traditional paper, Hanji. With a charcoal, an instrument that allows her to walk into her painting, she fills in the the blank until the image of herself is reflected on the surface of the paper and creates her own small universe like a scene of a black-and-white film.

‘Feeling shadowy’, is about a moment of being captivated by the nature of her painting, such as a grove of dark blue trees and patches of white light illuminating a faint middle tone and brightly-colored little marks of vines. Being part of the shadow, she yearns for the moment of becoming one with the universe where there is no concept of time.

목탄을 주요 재료로 사용하며 ‘비움’과 ‘채움’이 서로 다르지 않다는 동양적 사유의 방식을 표현하는 작가 이성경. 화면을 까맣게 채우며 만들어내는 거울의 역설을 통해 ‘비움’, 더 나아가 ‘채움’으로서의 여백의 미를 보여주는 그녀의 작업은 넝쿨, 겨울 나무, 텅빈 공간 등의 익숙한 일상적 풍경에서 받는 생경함, 혹은 낯선 곳에서 느끼는 친숙함 등의 다양한 감정을 표현하는 일련의 회화 작품들로 구성되어 있다. 반복적인 무수한 선을 중첩시키며 응축된 감정을 쏟아내는 제스처를 통해 끊임없이 자신의 정체성에 물음을 던지는 그녀의 작품은 주체와 그림자의 경계를 무색케 하며 그림과 하나 되는 순간, 나와 타인의 경계가 흐려지는 순간 등을 동경하는 작가의 심상을 표현하고 있다.
