 강현경 작가는 자신의 반려견의 죽음을 목도하는 짧은 순간, 그 경험을 통해 자연과의 일치를 배웠다고 한다. 익숙한 마당 한 켠에 누워서 마지막 숨을 거두는 작은 동물을 마음 속에 영원히 담는 법을 말이다. 반려견과 함께 했던 시간, 추억들이 설명할 수 없는 무엇으로 바뀌고 한 순간 영원히 죽지 않는 자신의 일부가 되는 강한 경험은 자신이 꿈 속에서 나비가 된 건지 나비가 꿈에 자신이 된 건지 모르는 장자의 ‘호접지몽(胡蝶之夢)’의 우화를 떠올리게 한다. 장자가 이야기하는 ‘물아일체(物我一體)’ 사상에 대해서 의견이 분분하지만 강현경 작가가 작품 속 대상을 대하는 방식은 감각적, 피상적 존재 인식이 아니라 마치 시가 만들어 지는 과정처럼 홀연히 다가갈 수 있는 진실에 관한 것이다. 그려 놓은 동물들이 금방이라도 화면 밖으로 튀어 나올 것처럼 일견 사실적이지만 가까이 다가가면 미색의 몸통 위에 그려 놓은 무수한 점이나 빼곡한 털들이 결국은 하나하나의 패턴이라는 것, 초록 바탕을 은근히 드러내는 하얀 나뭇잎은 숨을 고르며 한 줄 한 줄 그어 내려간 선묘라는 것을 알 수 있다. 늘 다양한 재료로 꾸준히 실험해 온 강현경 작가에게 어쩌면 대상 자체가 중요한 것은 아닐 것이다. 그녀가 바라보는 대상과 캔버스에 투사되는 대상 등의 이미지는 눈으로 본 이미지가 아니라 마음으로 본 이미지이기 때문이다.

 Hyunkyung Kang learned the philosophy of the unity of the ego and the outside world when she felt the death of her dog dying on the floor in her house. She buried him in her heart while looking into his eyes right before they were closed forever. Memories of her dog, the time that she spent with him have turned into something that lives forever. What she felt on the death of her dog can remind us of a dream that the Chinese philosopher, Zhuang Zhou once had, which was about a butterfly that he turned into. He asks us who had the dream. It might have been the butterfly that turned into Zhuang Zhou in its dream. Like the story of Zhuang Zhou’s dream, the way she deals with the subject of her painting is not about perceiving an existence superficially. It is like how a poem is written and reveals the truth. The way the subject of her painting is depicted is so realistic, as if the animal was about to pop out of the painting. As the viewer gets close to the painting, however, all he perceives is just patterns that are lots of dots on the animals and white lines that make the shape of tree leaves of the painting. All of them contribute to making a scene of her painting, but they seem to vanish into thin air at the same time. For a long time she has made lots of paintings, experimenting lots of materials. However, what she draws or paints might not be very important because it is not really about making an image. It is about depicting what she perceives in her heart.
